The historical relevance to our cultural heritage is depicted within the "Frieze of American History". It is rendered to appear as a bas-relief frieze, carved stone, but is actually a trompe-l'œil fresco cycle, painted in oil, depicting 19 scenes from American history.  (See the Dome Interior drawing above displaying those paintings in the wall panels)
